Testimonial - Anuci Press
Millie Abecassis - Author of Daughters of the Blue Moon
Hi, I'm Millie, a French-American author of speculative fiction. I was born and raised in France and now live in California. I write across speculative genres and love to blend them together in the novels and novellas I create. Most of my books also feature sapphic romance or themes. Besides writing, I'm the creator and host of #SmallPitch, the first online pitch event for authors dedicated to small and indie publishers.
You can find me on my website at millieabecassis.com. I'm also on Bluesky at @millieabecassis.com and on Instagram/Threads at @millie_abks. You can follow the #SmallPitch account on Twitter at @small_pitch.
Daughters of the Blue Moon is a sapphic dark fantasy retelling of Little Red Riding Hood about the right to choose your own path in life, including bodily autonomy. It features witches, dream-walkers, magical tattoos, and of course, wolves.
What Is Your Book Daughters of the Blue Moon about?
Why did you decide to publish your book with Anuci Press? How was your querying experience with them?
I had been following Anuci Press for a while, since their launch in 2023, and was intrigued by the owner's passion for books and authors, and by the positive experience authors working with him had been sharing online. I also loved the covers, as they work with great cover artists such as Ruth Anna Evans and A. A. Medina whose work I love.
Daughters of the Blue Moon had done very well in the trenches, getting a high request rate and super kind personalized rejections from editors who had no doubt this novella would find its home eventually.
After a few weeks in the querying process, I wondered if Tony Anuci, the owner of Anuci Press, would be interested in other types of dark fiction besides horror, which is the focus of his press. So I emailed him and asked. He responded quickly and positively, saying he was open to other genres besides traditional horror, and invited me to submit my manuscript. A couple of weeks later it was in his inbox, and a couple of weeks after that he emailed me back saying he had loved the novella and was interested in publishing it. We had a great conversation and I felt that joining Anuci Press with this novella was the right choice. His love for the story and communication style were exactly what I needed for this book.
How has your publishing experience with Anuci Press been (so far)?
It has been a great experience so far. Tony Anuci is a man of passion who doesn't compromise on quality. Also, he’s transparent and honest about what he can do for your book and what he envisions. We quickly agreed to push the release of my book to early 2025 as Anuci Press’s release schedule for 2024 was already busy. We have also discussed what cover artist we plan to work with, and I really enjoyed being able to voice my opinion on the matter as I believe covers matter a lot.
Regarding the contract itself, Tony was willing to answer my questions and adjust the language of the clauses to spell out what mattered to me as an author and make changes as needed.
I feel like we’re building a great partnership and I can't wait to get my book into the world and perhaps work on more projects with Anuci Press.
Would you recommend Anuci Press to other writers?
Definitely. My only caveat would be to make sure you know what you’re getting into. Anuci Press is a new rising horror press with a passionate owner, but it is also a very small indie press, which means you will have to do your part in marketing the book. It doesn’t mean Tony won’t do it too (he absolutely does market books!) but as with many small presses, it’s a team effort.
For you, what are some of the pros & cons of publishing with a small press/indie publisher?
You may not get the same reach and resources than with Big 5 publishers, but instead you have a much more personalized approach to your book and a stronger voice in the publishing process. To quote Robert Lewis from Polymath Press, another publisher I have signed with for another novella, you get the best of both worlds (trad/self).
